CHAPTER TWELVE

As she lay in Mitch's bed, cradled in his arms, Nadine grimaced at her own audacity. She'd told him she loved him! It was way too early for such confessions. As little as Nadine knew about relationships, she was certain of this much.

Here she'd been trying to build their nest straw by and straw, and she'd gone and sat in it long before it was finished. She winced where Mitch couldn't see her, with her nose against his chest. Now what was she supposed to do?

"Uh," she said.

"Mm," Mitch replied. He kissed the top of her head again.

Nadine closed her eyes. "Um, about what I said..."

Mitch went still.

Nadine's panic deepened. "I, uh, you can forget it, all right. Passion of the moment and all that."

Mitch's arms tightened ever so slightly around her. "Yeah. Right. It's way too early to be talking about love. We barely know each other."

Nadine made a face against Mitch's chest. "Right."

There was a brief, incredibly uncomfortable silence. Then Mitch let out a sigh. "But there is something going on, isn't there? We don't — I mean, it's not...casual."

Whoa. Nadine made herself breathe. "No," she answered softly, then cleared her throat. "I, uh, don't think it's casual."

Mitch's big body seemed to relax. "For one thing, I've never brought a girl up here before."

Nadine smiled. "I kinda figured."

Mitch chuckled and hugged her. "You do have a way of making me do things...out of character."

"Tell me about it," Nadine snorted.

Mitch unwrapped Nadine enough to look at her. "Maybe we're not exactly in love yet, but the genie's out of the bottle, so to speak."

"The genie?"

Mitch's smile was a strange mixture of amusement and grimness. "The kind of thing you can't put back in the bottle once you've let it out."

Nadine lowered her lashes. "Oh." But she still didn't get it. Was that good or bad?

"And so." Mitch massaged the nape of her neck. "The genie's out. Nothing we can do about it. We might as well sit back and enjoy the ride."

Enjoy the ride? Nadine's brows flinched. Good grief, here she was trying to build a nest, wanting to make something lasting, and Mitch only wanted to 'enjoy the ride?'

Mitch started to frown. "Is something wrong?"

Nadine blinked. Just in time she remembered what Sherry had said. Men didn't think about building nests. That was women's territory.

A man had to be drawn to the nest, convinced of its benefits.

Gently.

Gently, then, Nadine smiled over at him. Softly, she settled closer to his big, warm body. She might be a rank amateur at this relationship business, but she could be a quick study.

"No," she told Mitch, kissing his collarbone. "Nothing's wrong. Not a thing."

He was silent a moment. "So, we're agreed?"

"Agreed on what?"

A breath escaped him. "That we're...beyond casual."

Nadine smiled as a warm happiness flowed through her. He did want to build the nest. He was just a man, and maybe...shy. Hell, she could understand shyness. "Yeah," she said. "We're agreed."

He put his arm around her, pulled the covers over them, and she snuggled close.
